TikTok Influencers Fueling Unofficial Market for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Medication

An underground market for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and sellers on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.

Investigational Treatment Gaining Popularity Via Social Media

Retatrutide, which remains in research studies, is being promoted by online personalities for its alleged fat-burning effects. Followers are encouraged to contact these accounts directly for source information, while also receiving discount codes.

Thriving Commerce on Social Networks

Additionally, a robust market exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of participants share comparison photos, administration instructions and assertions of next-day British shipping. Sellers promote the drug there before redirecting buyers to other platforms for purchases.

Understanding The Experimental Drug

Retatrutide is an experimental injectable created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three gut hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Preliminary studies suggest it could help individuals lose up to 25% of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed digitally as the next Ozempic.

Medical Professionals Voice Concerns

However, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the distribution of what remains an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could lead to users injecting substances of unknown origin.

Some experts stated the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the rising cost of approved slimming products such as Mounjaro.

Legal Status and Enforcement

Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be marketed or supplied for human use under the British medical regulations.

Some content creators attempt to sidestep the regulations by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but advertising and supply can still breach medicines, advertising, and customer regulations, risking fines, legal action or imprisonment.

Platform Response and Material Elimination

Based on the social media company, the platform has taken down problematic content and banned associated hashtags and search suggestions. The organization stated it was committed to keeping the service secure and investing in strengthening enforcement strategies.

Online Trading Activities

Research also discovered communities with up to nine thousand participants selling retatrutide using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately brings up groups with thousands of members, filled with photos of slimming results, positive reviews and step-by-step guides for mixing or administering at residence.

Within moments of entering one community, a seller shared contact information, where most purchases take place. The seller sent an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within two days. When questioned whether the product was genuine, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a supposed testing documentation. None inquired about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.

Product Information and Costs

Inside these communities, messages show black plastic packages with postal service stickers, stating to contain fresh supplies. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between powder vials, prepared at home with sterile water, or pre-filled injectors typically sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When questioned how long a pen should be used, sellers give conflicting answers ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.

Platform Moderation and Safety Measures

A spokesperson for Telegram stated it actively moderated dangerous content on its platform including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Expert Cautions

“Individuals are administering materials they can’t verify. Although the research behind this drug is valid, these online products may not include what they advertise,” said Jason Murphy, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the increase in demand to recent price rises for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, individuals are turning to online platforms. But counterfeit treatments are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she explained.

Her team has previously seen individuals harmed by self-injection from unconfirmed sources. “We understand the frustration, but buying from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your well-being,” stated Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Producer Position

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company stated the substance was in third stage clinical trials and had not been evaluated or approved by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this time no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, adding that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly experimental product not yet approved … may expose users to possibly significant health risks”.
